It jolted me awake and the dogs barked and ran outside. Then I went back to sleep. I live about fifteen miles from the epicenter.

Hell of an alarm clock.

Many people around me felt the 2011 Virginia quake, but I did not, despite it breaking a water piper right next to my apartment.

Yeah. Our home is relatively resistant to seismicity; it’d take a big shake to do significant damage. We’re single story, heavily sheared, and the masonry chimney is gone.

Our house is the oppposite. Stucco, chimney, and poorly constructed in the 40s. Felt like the entire house drove over a rumble strip.

But the house is a rental. You know what the fastest house in the world is? A rental house.

Fastest house?

We’re near Hayward. You?

That was a joke. The fastest car in the world is a rental car. So the fastest house in the world must be a rental house?

The City of Richmond. Was that a firework or a gunshot? :)

It couldn’t have been a gunshot because there was only one.

The one that disturbed the Washington Monument?

Yep, only a 5.8, but could be felt a long way (though not by me apparently).

5.8 is not insignificant.

No, but I was in New York, which is a good way away.

I felt it here in Portland, OR because both our phones kept dinging with SFALERT notices about the quake. No matter how many times I’ve tried unsubscribing from that thing since I moved out of the Bay Area I still keep getting those damn alerts. Hey, at least I know which streets in the city my friends should stay away from I guess?

That is far. I think that while in SF a 7 or 8 would be considered epic, for that neck of the woods 5.8 would be. Epic.

I got shaken awake by one in downstate Illinois maybe a decade ago. I was in Springfield at the time. I thought I had just gotten too close to the edge and woke up by nearly falling off the bed. Imagine my surprise when I heard on the news that it was an earthquake.

The big one that damaged the Washington Monument?
